Picking the Best Time to Paint Your Home’s Exterior

Picking the best time to paint your house

A fresh coat of paint can turn your home from bland to beautiful in a matter of days, but choosing the best time to paint your home can be a challenge. Numerous factors can get in the way of you and your home’s new eye-popping exterior, many of which have to do with the weather. Luckily, there are certain times that are ideal for giving your home the picturesque exterior paint job you’ve been dreaming about.

When is the Best Time to Paint Your Home’s Exterior?

The best season to paint your home’s exterior is in the early summer or early fall. During these months, the weather is more predictable and conditions are less extreme. Some of the biggest factors that can affect your exterior painting project are things like rain or fluctuating temperatures, and these are less prevalent during the first few weeks of summer and fall. The seasons to generally avoid are the spring months and winter.

Why These Months Are Better When Starting an Exterior Painting Project

If you’re wondering why you shouldn’t paint your home in a season like spring or early winter for example, it comes down to the favorable weather conditions. Exterior paint needs a considerable amount of time to fully dry and cure, and without the right conditions, your paint job may look messy and your home’s exterior won’t be properly protected from the elements.

Below are some other reasons why early summer and early fall are the best time to paint your home’s exterior.

Less Chance of Rain

Rainfall can be difficult to predict no matter what season it is, but in the early summer and fall, there’s less of a chance that an errant storm may ruin your lovely new paint job. Nearly all of spring and the later summer months are known for heavy rainfall and wet weather, which can not only prevent you from going out to paint to begin with, but can keep your paint from drying fully and possibly cause it to run from the wet surface. Dry weather is almost always perfect for a quality paint job.

Paint Will Not Stick if it’s Too Cold

The primary reason why late fall and all of winter are out of the question is because of how extreme cold can affect your paint’s ability to stick. Paint becomes thicker in cold weather, which can make it difficult to evenly spread across your home. This can result in an uneven coat, and a paint job that ultimately looks unprofessional and sloppy.

Less Humidity

Whereas extreme cold will affect your home’s paint, extreme heat and humidity can also impede your exterior painting project. Just as rainfall can prevent drying and ruin the protectiveness of your paint, excessive humidity can have a near identical effect. Although it may not affect it as dramatically at first, the sheer amount of moisture your paint can take on in humid weather will ultimately ruin what would be a pristine exterior.

Delays Aren’t as Likely

Aside from the minute meteorological details, painting during these times can help prevent delays that would make your exterior painting project more difficult than it needs to be. The most important part of painting the exterior of your home is the ability to comfortably stand outside of your home for an extended period of time. If you’re trying to paint during a time when it’s downpouring or the weather is unfavorable for some other reason, then the project is going to take much longer than you want it to.

How Warm is Too Warm When Painting Outside?

The upper limit of how hot it can be for you to effectively paint your house varies based on what kind of paint you use. If you’re using a latex-based paint, it’s recommended that you don’t paint if it is warmer than 85 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re using an oil-based paint, however, you can still paint so long as the temperature doesn’t exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Painting in extreme heat and weather warmer than these limits can cause your paint to crack, blister, or peel.
